Shocking Revelation!

December 10th, 2005

Well, I have uncovered something that will intrigue us, no matter what our political stripes. Paul Martin, the champion of ending gun violence is again wrong on the issue.

To quote Maclean's Magazine Website, "Handguns are already severely restricted in Canada and a handgun registry has been in force for more than 60 years." How intriguing! Essentially, a ban already exists, but when the Liberals see a chance to capitalize on people's sorrow, and outrage for an increase in violence to gain votes. Who was in power when this increase occured? Federally, the Liberals. Provincially, the Ontario Liberals, in which the province has seen the horrendous effects most dramatically. How convenient...

From the same article: "Basically, all handguns in Canada are illegal now," said Comartin. "The only people who get permits are those who are using them for recreational purposes or those who need it for their own personal safety and there's not a lot of those that are granted." The Mr. Comartin who made this quote is the NDP Member of Parliament for Windsor. Hmm, if they are already essentially illegal, doesn't that mean that the Liberals are, again, just playing on emotions to gain votes?

Whatever is convenient, I suppose.

There's nothing wrong with harsher penalties for gun-related offences, or supporting the gun registry. How do you know that by requiring people to register firearms they aren't preventing guns from -generally-falling into the wrong hands? Yes, most crimes are committed by illegally obtained firearms, but it's also important to ensure that the people purchasing guns and bullets are capable in mind and skill. Te issue has to be border-control, as well. It's actually been proven that people who own guns for personal protection are more likely to shoot, hurt or kill someone in their own family than a burglur or someone like that. If, as you quote, handguns are already essentially illegal than there shouldn't be too much controversy over baning such a harmful weapon. Hunting rifles and the like are perfectly acceptable as long as the owners store them properly, and I'm sure the government respects these law-abiding individuals who own non-threatening guns that aren't likely to harm anyone. I'm sure the point of this new gun-control plan is to get rid of the most dangerous, and easily obtained weapons. Now, if only we could make the ammo harder to obtain, and less likely to kill people. Then, we'd all be safer.

Back up the facts, Laura. I want specific proof, websites, sources of your information. Secondly, you completely missed my point. It's not controversial that, if they are already banned, there will be little resistance. The point you missed is, if they are already banned, why are the Liberals making a big deal out of this? Capitalizing on fear is all they are doing.
