Paul Martin desperatly clinging to Power?

Well after watching the federal debates last night I have to say that Paul Martin looks pitiful. I personally think that he is desperatly trying to cling to power. His constitutional reform is an absoulute joke. Without consulting the provinces this promise is a liberal promise. Paul Martin is trying to americanize canada by giving the Supreme Court of Canada absoulute power. I have to agree with Stephen Harper's comment that Canada is somewhere in between Britain and America and the power is equally shared between the Courts and Parliament. Obviously Martin is trying to make constitutional reform a weage issuse and remove power from elected officals and place it in the hands of old appionted fogies. Here is a suggestion to the liberal party why not try and bring Quebec in the consitiution rather than americanize Canada.

Stand Up for Canada

That's why I will vote Conservative

I sense a slight touch of flip-flopping from our diligent bloggers. Aren't Conservatives adopting a plan to make elected officials more accountable, essentially, taking away their power? Isn't Stephen Harper pro-America? What's the problem with limiting the federal government's ability to ignore the Charter???
Let's get the facts right, shall we?
S 33 "the not withstanding clause" of the Charter was put into the Charter to appease the provinces who wouldn't agree to the patriation of the Constitution and an amending formula unless they had some more power. Trudeau hated S.33. because he didn't want the rights and freedoms to be taken away.
Now, Paul Martin is suggesting removing S.33, as I undertstand, in terms of federal jurisdiction. This means that the FEDERAL gvt will not be able to ignore or pass a law that overides a Charter right/freedom. The provinces would still maintain their power. As for the amending forumla...well, I don't know because generally 10 provinces that represent 50% of the Canadian population have to agree to change the Constitution. I have no idea what the P.M. plans to do to get around this one.

Is removing the not withstanding clause good? Well, it takes away the power of the federal government. On the other hand, the fed gvt has never used S.33 , so it's not really necessary and is just lip service. I don't anticipate this will evolve into much after the campaign.

Yes, Laura, let's get the facts straight... What is the Federal Accountability Act? An act that ensures nothing like the Sponsorship Scandal, the HRDC boondoggle, or David Dingwall never happens again. Yes, the FAA will take power away- the power to steal two-hundred and fifty million dollars, to give to Liberal Friendly firms. And there you have it Laura; the facts.
